Diana Morrison, Chair of the Savannah Area Chamber Board of Directors introduced to Savannah’s business community large and small, Economist Dean Robert Sumichrast. Dean Sumichrast spoke to over 500 attendees on the state of Georgia’s economy. Even though the news was not wonderful he stated that the first two quarters of 2009 will be the hardest but things will be looking up the last two quarters. His comments on the turn of the economic condition is strongly based on when the financial markets “thaw”. He gave much useful information on how in a down economy a smaller business can benefit from his larger competitor cutting his advertising budget as long as the small business jumps on the band wagon now and creates a culture among their clients to keep them loyal when times are better.Diana Morrison introduces economist Dean Sumichrast to large & small business community in Savannah, GA.

Memorial Health and Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce Unify in Message to General Assembly
The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting an event Tuesday, Jan. 6 to send “a clear and unified message to the Georgia General Assembly to identify a permanent source of funding to strengthen and expand the trauma system in the state of Georgia,” according to the Chamber.
Speakers will include Diana Morrison, chairwoman of the Chamber’s board of directors; Chatham Chief of Police Michael Berkow; Chatham County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis; and State Senator Eric Johnson.
Pam Russell and her daughter, Charlee as well as Savannahian Walter Maxwell, a survivor from the 2008 Imperial Sugar Refinery fire, will also speak.
Charlee the granddaughter of legendary UGA and Georgia Southern football coach Erk Russell, was involved in an automobile accident near Statesboro and her mother credits Memorial’s Level 1 trauma center for saving her life.
Maxwell was a survivor of the sugar refinery fire and was brought to Memorial’s trauma center for lifesaving care.
It is estimated that if Georgia had more trauma hospitals per capita, based on the national average for the number of trauma hospitals per capita, 700 lives would be saved each year that would otherwise die in a trauma accident, according to Memorial Health officials.
